About Silambam

Silambam is a very old traditional martial art of Tamil Nadu, India. It mainly uses a bamboo stick for self-defense. In ancient times, people carried sticks to protect themselves from wild animals and enemies. While walking long distances, they practiced swinging the stick, which slowly developed into fighting techniques. It is believed that Sage Agasthiar introduced Silambam about 5000 years ago in the Pothigai Hills of Tamil Nadu. Later, the Chola, Chera, and Pandya kings made Silambam an important part of military training for their soldiers. During British rule, warriors like Veera Pandiya Kattabomman used Silambam to fight against the British. Because it was powerful, the British banned it. Even then, people continued to practice Silambam for physical fitness and tradition.
